First App Icon Ideas

These six ideas take inspiration from the four app icons I researched earlier. Four of them I based the design around a single icon where the last two I experimented with text in the middle. All of the icons have the two toned colour scheme which seems to be trend in education apps. The one problem I see with these designs is that they may work for the older target audience but aren’t that attractive to my younger audience. So i may have to design another lot of logos to appeal for that part of my audience.

Branding Research

This is the first part of looking at existing app logo’s of education app’s that are targeted to 14-18 year olds. All of them are very similar to each other, they all have two toned colours and one image in the middle of the logo (either coloured or white). Half of the app’s images link directly to the name of the app where the other hand link indirectly. The main ideas I have got from this research is that I need to keep my design as simple as possible and show a possible direct link between the image and the name of the app. This will make the audience know what my app is about straight away from my logo rather then them having to read into my app after seeing it.

Budgeting Research

Some of the main highlights of this document:

  • The costs of apps are largely based on features, complexity, and platform.
  • Apps with back-end servers will almost always cost more.
  • Simple apps for one platform will start around $25,000.
  • More complex apps cost six figures but can push up over $1,000,000.
  • Costs will also vary based on who builds it (e.g., offshore versus high-end agency).
  • Don’t forget to budget for updates, marketing, your own salary, and other costs.
  • The total first round raise for 18 months he suggested is $750,000 (breakdown below):

$35,000 per month for a team of four: The timeline to build a v1.0 app is usually anywhere between 4-6 months which totals at about $90,000 to $140,000.

This source was a good way to see how the whole budget gets split into their different departments. It has been very useful to get a initial idea on how much money is required for making an app.

|This second source is a great way to get a more specific budget for my app. As it allows me to choose what options I want in my app and it creates a personal budget for my project. However even though it shows the breakdown of what goes into my app and the total budget, it doesn’t show how much each sections costs which is not very useful. This problem is limiting as I do not know how much each section costs which will limit my ability to create a full blown budget.

This version of the timeline section of my app contains a lot more detail than the first. The first timeline design will stay as the main header for the events. The user can quickly scroll through our entire history. But if they want to look at more detail on certain events, such as the Rise of Nazism, then the user can click on the year or topic as a starting point. This is where these screenshots come in. After the user has selected the year and topic they will then see some of the mean events which happened in the months and days of that year. If they keep scrolling they will go through the years and learning some of the main events which happened. The timeline will give them the starting knowledge that will help them through the lessons part of the app. The combination of brief details in text and pictures give a good balance of learning information by text and seeing what certain events looked like in the past.
